About American River Wharf & Moorings
American River takes its name from a camp of American sealers who set up on this Kangaroo Island shore in the early 1800s, and the township that grew here still trades on the water. It sits roughly halfway between the SeaLink ferry terminal at Penneshaw and Kingscote, facing Eastern Cove, and its harbour is widely regarded by cruising sailors as the island's best all-weather refuge, sheltered from every direction. The place is not a marina in the conventional sense: it is a working government wharf, a council boat ramp and a wide field of private swing moorings that between them serve commercial fishing boats, oyster farm punts, trailer boats and the steady trickle of cruising yachts that tuck in when the Backstairs Passage turns ugly. Oyster leases line parts of the inlet, and a farm shed at the wharf sells fresh oysters straight off the leases. The township behind the foreshore is small and quiet, with a general store, a community oval and twenty-four-hour petrol rather than any strip of shops. Pelicans, tammar wallabies and glossy black cockatoos are routine sights, and Pelican Lagoon, the broad basin at the head of the inlet, is a declared aquatic reserve closed to all vessels. What distinguishes American River is precisely this unpolished mix: a genuine fishing harbour, a deeply protected anchorage and a mooring field that has grown organically over decades, with none of the fingers, power pedestals and security gates of a mainland marina. For visiting yachts it is often the first or last Kangaroo Island landfall, sitting as it does on the Backstairs Passage side of the island, and in bad weather the harbour can hold a dozen cruising boats at once alongside the resident fleet.
Marina facilities
Facilities at American River are basic but functional, and it pays to arrive knowing exactly what is and is not there. The main wharf was built for commercial vessels: it stands high off the water, has no ladders and is impractical for yachts to lie alongside. A lower northern extension is used by local commercial boats, and visiting craft are advised to raise the local volunteer marine rescue on VHF Channel 21 before attempting to use it. Immediately south of the wharf is the public boat ramp, one of five launching facilities maintained by the Kangaroo Island Council; it carries a five-tonne limit and is the practical point of access for tenders as well as trailer boats. A mooring pontoon alongside operates under a two-hour maximum stay rule, useful for loading and unloading but not for overnighting. Toilets and other small facilities stand near the ramp, and the general store on the foreshore road towards Ballast Head covers provisions, while twenty-four-hour petrol is available in the township, though there is no fuel berth on the water. The harbour's berthing is dominated by private swing moorings: there is no public mooring management, no visitor berth booking system and no marina office, and visitors either anchor clear of the moorings or pick up a vacant mooring at their own risk. There is no pump-out, no slipway, no chandlery and no repair trade on site; the nearest substantial marine services are at Kingscote or across the passage on the mainland. What the harbour does provide is secure holding, shelter from all directions and a shore base within a short walk of the ramp.
Local sailing knowledge
The approach to American River is through a well-marked entrance channel off Eastern Cove, and once inside the shelter is complete, which is why the anchorage fills with cruising boats whenever strong weather is forecast. The catch is the clutter: decades of private moorings crowd the channel branches, and old chains lie on the bottom with no buoys attached, so many skippers prefer to borrow a mooring rather than trust an anchor around the snags. Holding is good in sand, but the tidal flow through the inlet is strong, producing pronounced wind-against-tide effects; boats frequently lie in unexpected directions and crews occasionally find the rode wrapped around the keel after a tide change. In a hard south-westerly the channel can turn choppy, and local advice is to anchor immediately north of Picnic Point or shift across to Newland Bay beyond Ballast Head. After the boat ramp the channel splits: the southern arm dead-ends at Picnic Point, while the northern arm opens into Pelican Lagoon, which is off-limits to vessels as an aquatic reserve. Fishing is a major draw, with whiting, salmon trout, tommies, garfish and sand crabs taken in the inlet, and the last two hours of the run-in tide between the township and Kangaroo Head regarded as the pick for whiting. Ashore, the oyster shed at the wharf and the general store cover the essentials, while Penneshaw and Kingscote are each about a twenty-five-minute drive. Mobile phone coverage is reasonable in the township. Note that the moorings are private property, so courtesy demands checking with locals before tying on for anything more than a temporary stop.
