About Cockatoo Island Marina & Cockatoo Boat Storage
Berthing your boat beside a UNESCO World Heritage-listed convict prison is not an option anywhere else in Australia, and that alone makes the Cockatoo Island operation singular. The island, known as Wareamah to Sydney's First Nations people, spent the nineteenth century as a convict gaol whose prisoners cut dry docks from the sandstone, then most of the twentieth as the nation's busiest naval dockyard, before passing to the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust and opening to the public. The boating businesses are privately run under licence: Cockatoo Boat Storage and the Cockatoo Island Marine Centre handle dry storage and berthing while the Trust manages the island itself, its campground, heritage houses and two licensed cafes. The atmosphere for a berth holder is unlike any marina on the harbour. You tie up under giant hammerhead cranes and convict-cut cliffs, with glamping tents on the apron above and day-trippers wandering past with audio tours, and on New Year's Eve the island becomes one of the most contested pieces of foreshore on Sydney Harbour. Location is the other ace: the island sits at the junction of the Parramatta River and the main harbour, about three kilometres from the Harbour Bridge, closer to Darling Harbour, Barangaroo and North Sydney than almost any other berthing option, and a free customer tender service stitches it to pick-up points around the harbour. The operator's pitch is unashamedly about taking the hassle out of harbour boating, dry storage with valet-style launching rather than mooring minding. It works: the concept of keeping a boat in a secure island shed and having it waiting at the dock two hours after a phone call has found a loyal following among time-poor Sydney boat owners.
Marina facilities
The dry boat storage is the flagship service and runs on a valet model. Boats are racked or stored on hardstand in secure island facilities; owners book by phone or through the operator's app, give as little as two hours' notice, and the boat is in the water ready when they arrive. Because there is no vehicle access to the island, the company runs fast tender vessels that collect customers from convenient points around the harbour, and it will even stock the boat with ice, drinks and food for the day. Storage customers receive discounted overnight berthing. Marine trades are available on site or by arrangement: detailing and trimming, mechanical and electrical repairs, mast-step work, brightwork, fibreglass repairs and shipwright services, plus vinyl wrapping as a lower-cost alternative to paint. The yard can perform survey lifts on boats to 33 feet, arrange a tow if a vessel cannot reach the island under its own power, and assist with buying and selling boats. Wet berthing spans three products. The Camber Wharf visitor marina on the island's southern apron, opposite Balmain, has ten berths for boats to 32 feet and one to 42 feet with a maximum beam of 4.1 metres; an overhead crane imposes a 10-metre mast-height limit on inner berths. Short stays are first-come, first-served with no bookings: $15 for four hours for boats to 29 feet, $35 for 30 feet and over, paid at the Marina Cafe and Bar by the gangway. Overnight berths must be booked in advance, ideally 48 hours ahead, at $65 for boats to 29 feet and $95 for larger vessels, with power, water, toilets and showers available; New Year's Eve packages carry special-event rates. Longer-term berthing is offered in the Sutherland Dock and alongside Sutherland Wharf, and additional hardstand storage rounds out the offer.
Local sailing knowledge
For a skipper, Cockatoo Island is a simple harbour destination with a few quirks worth knowing. The island lies in the main Parramatta River shipping lane, so wash from ferries, RiverCats and commercial traffic is constant, and the Camber Wharf berths on the southern side cop their share; fender well and expect movement at peak ferry times. The approach is deep and unbridged from anywhere on the harbour, the Balmain peninsula lies a few hundred metres south, and the visitor berths sit just off the Marina Cafe, which doubles as the pay point. Overnight guests share the island with campers, heritage-house guests and, on event days, thousands of festival-goers, so the vibe ranges from serene winter mornings to full-throttle concert nights; check the island's event calendar before booking a quiet weekend. Security is on site around the clock, which eases the mind for overnight stays. Day visitors typically berth for a few hours, walk the convict precinct and dockyard tunnels, have lunch at the Marina Cafe and Bar or Cockatoo Overboard near the ferry wharf, and head home; the $15 four-hour rate makes it one of the cheapest days out on the harbour. The campground's laundry near the slipway can be used during office hours, and ice is sold at the Visitor Centre. For cruising itineraries, the island is a natural first or last night on a harbour circuit, with Lane Cove River and Bantry Bay upstream, and Rose Bay, Watsons Bay and the eastern anchorages down harbour. Ferry access via the F3 and F8 services means crew without cars can join easily from Circular Quay or Barangaroo. One practical note: there is no fuel on the island, so top up at White Bay, Rozelle Bay or d'Albora Rushcutters Bay before arriving.
