About CYCSA Marina West
Marina West is the big-boat arm of the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia, opened on 28 March 2009 after several years of planning, dredging and construction that cost the club $16 million. Its reason for existing was specific: South Australia had almost nowhere to berth yachts and motor boats much over eighteen metres, and the club's own members were buying larger boats with no pens long enough to hold them. The answer was 73 berths ranging from 11 to 35 metres - at opening, the biggest berths in the state - built by Bellingham Marine on its Unifloat concrete dock system with high freeboard and extra-wide walkways. More than sixty per cent of the berths sold before dredging was even finished. Two things set Marina West apart from every other marina on the Adelaide coast. The first is ownership: the CYCSA holds freehold title not only to the land but to the water itself, so berth holders can genuinely buy, lease and on-sell their berths rather than holding a revocable licence, a flexibility the club is candid about promoting. The second is integration: although Marina West operates as a distinct, highly secure enclave, berth holders step straight into the full facilities of the CYCSA - clubhouse, bistro, slipping yard, training academy and a 1,200-member sailing community on the LeFevre Peninsula at North Haven. The result is a marina that functions simultaneously as Adelaide's answer to the superyacht berth shortage and as the holding pen for the state's most serious offshore racing fleet.
Marina facilities
The 73 berths are all single pens, sized from 11 metres up to 35-metre mega berths, on concrete Unifloat pontoons whose high freeboard suits larger vessels - boarding a tall motor yacht here does not require a ladder. Every berth has provision for metered power and metered potable water, and the larger berths add reticulated sewer pump-out connections, a feature still rare in South Australian marinas and one that reflects the liveaboard-capable scale of the pens. Fairways are generous, dredged for deep keels, and the basin inside the North Haven harbour is sheltered in all weathers. A dedicated amenities building sits at the top of the Marina West gangway, fitted with showers and change rooms, digital television, internet access and a coffee and tea station - a deliberate step up from a standard ablution block, aimed at crews who effectively live aboard between races and deliveries. The whole marina is fenced, floodlit and protected by a monitored security alarm system, with on-site parking beside the pens. Beyond its own fence, berth holders use the CYCSA's wider plant: the clubhouse with its bistro, restaurant and bars, the slipping and maintenance area, sail-drying facilities, the dual-lane launch ramp and hardstand storage in Marina East, and the club's race office. Fuel, chandlery and marine trades are available within the North Haven precinct. Berths are sold and leased through the club on (08) 8248 4222; insurance requirements mirror the club's standard, with $20 million third-party liability and salvage cover mandatory. Casual berthing for visiting big boats is possible by arrangement when pens are free.
Local sailing knowledge
Marina West sits inside the North Haven Boat Harbour on the LeFevre Peninsula, entered from Gulf St Vincent through a beaconed, dredged channel between the breakwaters. The entrance faces west and can steepen in a strong sea breeze, but inside the harbour the water is flat in any conditions, which is the whole point for owners of large, high-windage vessels that are miserable to berth in crosswinds. Depths on approach and in the basin comfortably handle the 35-metre pens' draft requirements. The sailing on the doorstep is the club's reason for being. Gulf St Vincent offers reliable sea-breeze racing and sheltered coastal cruising; the CYCSA's offshore fleet campaigns from here to Port Lincoln, Kangaroo Island and Melbourne, and the marina empties noticeably when a long race is on. For cruisers, the standard Adelaide itineraries apply - the metropolitan coast south to Glenelg and Seacliff, or the fifty-mile crossing to Kangaroo Island's north shore. Ashore, the club is the social centre: the Admirals Bar and Mariners Ristorante serve members and guests, and the waterfront taverns and eateries around the North Haven basin are a short walk. Semaphore's shops and beach are five minutes by car, Port Adelaide ten, and the Adelaide CBD about thirty. Visiting skippers should call the club ahead; reciprocal arrangements with other yacht clubs apply, and the marina's security fencing means unannounced arrivals cannot simply walk in off the dock. The 35-metre pens have hosted everything from maxi racers between regattas to motor yachts using Adelaide as a summer base, and the club's race officers are a ready source of tide, weather and anchorage advice for the whole gulf.
