Framing the Nelson Bay waterfront a short walk from the town centre, d'Albora Marina Nelson Bay is the hub around which Port Stephens boating organises itself. The marina holds around 196 wet berths for vessels to 35 metres on the harbour's southern shore, its hardstand and travel lift backing onto the working side of the boat harbour while its boardwalk face doubles as the town's social promenade. This dual identity is the marina's defining trait. On one side sit the berths, the fuel dock and the boatyard; on the other, a marina village of restaurants, cafes, boutiques, an arcade and an ice creamery that pulls in as many landbound visitors as boaties, with fish feeding off the boardwalk at 10.30 each morning and live music on the forecourt most weekends. The marina serves as sailing headquarters for the Sail Port Stephens regatta each autumn and hosts the weigh-ins and briefings for the port's big game fishing tournaments in February, when the game boats raft three deep at the fuel dock. It is also the departure point for the dolphin and whale watching fleets, the Tea Gardens ferry and most of the port's charter operations. For the d'Albora network it is the flagship regional property, two and a half hours north of Sydney, and its events venue, Broughtons at the Bay, occupies the top floor with views across the port. The forecourt hosts the Taste at the Bay festival and New Year's Eve fireworks, and the Crows Nest apartment above the marina lets visitors sleep directly over the docks. Few regional marinas in Australia combine a working boatyard, a tournament venue and a dining strip at a single address.

Berthing covers 196 wet berths for boats to 35 metres, permanent, casual and superyacht, with water and power to every berth, wireless internet and even Foxtel access at the dock; casual berths can be booked online at any hour and dockmaster assistance runs seven days. Security is continuous, with private shower and toilet amenities, laundry, ice and on-site parking for berth holders, and d'Albora members get reciprocal rights across the network plus several free public berths reserved for daytime use. The fuel wharf operates 24 hours with diesel and petrol, and sewage pump-out is free with fuel. The boatyard runs a travel lift rated around 45 to 50 tonnes with an adjoining hardstand, where Mid North Marine Engineering handles mechanical work, pre-purchase inspections, servicing and repairs directly on the hardstand, supported by mobile marine mechanics, detailing and shipwright services; the yard's lineage includes the long-serving Noakes operation. Marine retail is unusually deep: Lee Marine and R Marine Port Stephens, the latter the local Riviera dealership, both trade from the marina alongside d'Albora Yacht Brokers and a Club Marine insurance presence, and jet ski storage is offered. The tenant village spans Mavericks on the Bay over two floors, Little Mavs seafood takeaway, The Wood Oven pizzeria, Hog's steakhouse, the Cafe on the Bay, the Marina Ice Creamery and gift and fashion boutiques, so provisioning, dining and boat buying all happen within a hundred metres of the berth. The member and guest services team coordinates contractors, deliveries and tour bookings for berth holders, and fuel pricing includes member discounts, with the pump-out at the fuel wharf making a genuine single-stop service. Black water disposal, water top-ups and pre-departure provisioning can all be completed without moving the boat more than a few hundred metres between berth, fuel dock and hardstand.
Local sailing knowledge
Nelson Bay's harbour is the natural base for Port Stephens, a port twice the size of Sydney Harbour with no bar and an entrance marked by leads that is passable in nearly all weather, though ebb tides against a strong easterly still kick up the Entrance Shoal. Coming into the marina, give the commercial wharf and the dawn charter rush a wide berth, and expect the harbour to be busy from first light when the dolphin fleet loads. The marina's position means everything is walkable: supermarkets, the fishermen's co-op for the day's catch, pubs and the visitor centre on Victoria Parade. The port itself is the cruising ground. Shoal Bay, Dutchies Beach and Salamander Bay offer public moorings within an hour's motor, Fame Cove and the Myall River system give shelter in any blow, and Broughton Island, with its public mooring off North Beach, is the classic day run in settled conditions. February's game fishing tournaments and the April to May Sail Port Stephens period are the two pinch points when casual berths effectively vanish, so book early or aim elsewhere in the port. VMR Port Stephens on Nelson Head overlooks the entrance and takes calls on VHF 16 around the clock. Whale watching runs from late autumn into spring, and it is not unusual for a berth holder's evening entertainment to be a humpback sounding off the breakwall. Summer nor'easters send a light chop into the harbour but the berths ride settled; the real movement comes from tour boat wash, so fenders earn their keep. Crew changes are easy with Newcastle airport under an hour away. The morning fish feeding draws crowds to the boardwalk, which tells arriving skippers exactly where the public edge of the marina lies.
