Brisbane's bayside suburb of Manly packs more sailing clubs into a few hundred metres of foreshore than almost anywhere in Queensland, and among them sits one of the district's oldest sporting institutions of any kind. Darling Point Sailing Squadron — DPSS — is a volunteer-run community club based on Norfolk Point, at Manly Boat Harbour's northern end, and its motto states its terms plainly: affordable, family-friendly sailing on the bay. A heritage record credits it as one of the longest continuously operating sporting clubs anywhere in the Wynnum-Manly district. The squadron's specialty is off-the-beach sailing — dinghies and skiffs raced on Waterloo Bay — and its lineage in the 16ft skiff class is long and genuine. The club raced the class as its senior fleet from 1946, hosted the national championship on its home waters in the summer of 1982–83, and still sends skiffs to the Australian titles: the DPSS boat RW Retail, sailed by Carlton Smith, contested the 2021/22 championship at Belmont on Lake Macquarie.
