Port Douglas supports two separate sailing organisations, and visitors regularly confuse them. The marina-based Port Douglas Yacht Club stages the town's big keelboat occasions, including Race Week and the revived Clipper Cup, while Douglas Sailing Club does its sailing with sand under the hulls, launching dinghies and catamarans straight off Four Mile Beach at the end of Solander Boulevard. It is a bring-your-own-boat club in the truest sense: every craft rigged on the sand belongs to a member, and the mix runs from small dinghies through to Hobie and Nacra catamarans of 4.5, 5 and 5.8 metres, with a Nacra 36 sighted among the fleet. Rather than weekly racing, the club concentrates its energy into one full sailing weekend each month, topped up by informal gatherings, and it welcomes casual sailors through a day-pass arrangement. Membership is open to every skill level, and newcomers are actively encouraged to arrive with their own boats, with dedicated secure boat storage provided at the beach — a genuine answer to the trailering burden that thins out off-the-beach fleets elsewhere.
