About Esperance Bandy Creek Boat Harbour
Bandy Creek Boat Harbour lies about 10 kilometres east of Esperance on the Southern Ocean, and it functions as the working maritime heart of a town otherwise famous for white beaches and the Recherche Archipelago. Built and managed by the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure, it is a genuine fishing boat harbour first and a recreational marina second: the eastern side is a commercial basin with 28 pens, a trawler jetty and a land-backed service wharf, while the western side holds 20 Mediterranean-style recreational pens beside the public ramp. That split personality shows on any given morning, when abalone and shark boats load gear a stone's throw from retirees washing down trailer cruisers. Esperance itself is a remote service town roughly 720 kilometres east-south-east of Perth, and the harbour is the only sheltered, engineered refuge on a long stretch of wave-beaten coast, which makes it strategically important for vessels transiting between Albany and the east. Curiously, although the two basins are an easy run apart by water, they are several kilometres apart by road, so the harbour feels like two facilities sharing one wall. Visiting cruisers tend to base themselves on the recreational side and quickly fall in with the local routine of early launches, fish cleaning at Summys Park and evenings watching the light change over the islands. Add a two-lane ramp, a private slipway and the Esperance Deep Sea Angling Club nearby, and Bandy Creek covers almost every need a southern-coast skipper has, without ever losing its no-nonsense fishing-port character.
Marina facilities
The harbour's 48 berths split between 28 commercial pens on the east side and 20 recreational pens, in 11 and 12 metre Mediterranean stern-to format with a walkway, on the west. The 150-metre land-backed service wharf on the eastern side provides single-phase and limited three-phase power, water, lighting and diesel refuelling, with fuel delivery arranged through South East Petroleum (phone 08 9071 1065); the wharf is engineered for 50-tonne displacement vessels and a 30-tonne gross crane load. At its southern end, the trawler jetty offers two 30-metre berths for vessels up to 300 tonnes displacement, gated and monitored by CCTV. Boat maintenance centres on the privately operated 60-tonne slipway on the north-eastern side, run by the Esperance Professional Fisherman's Association (phone 08 9071 3531). On the recreational side there is a two-lane ramp with a catwalk off Daw Drive, car and trailer parking, public toilets and cold-water showers, a penholder-only toilet and shower block on the east side, and Summys Park's public barbecues and fish-cleaning table. Published fees charge fixed pens per metre of pen length, currently $530.60 per metre annually without walkway and $606.40 with walkway, with quarterly and casual options. Depths matter here: the turning basin and service wharf carry about 4.2 metres below datum, the commercial pens about 3.5 metres and the recreational pens a nominal 2 metres, deepening to 4.2 metres at the outer pens; the harbour is dredged roughly every two years, and vessels drawing more than 3 metres should confirm depths with the Esperance DoT office before arrival.
Local sailing knowledge
The harbour's entrance is dredged and marked, but Bandy Creek itself is shallow and the basin depths vary between the commercial and recreational sides, so first-time visitors should ring the DoT Esperance office ahead of arrival, which is also a condition of use for fee payment and documentation. The real prize beyond the entrance is the Recherche Archipelago: more than a hundred granite islands and reefs stretching east, with Woody Island offering walks and camping, and charter boats running eco, fishing and diving trips out of Esperance. Inshore, the Kepwari Wetland Trail and the foreshore paths fill a rest day, and the RAC Esperance Holiday Park sits within walking distance of the recreational basin. The Lucky Bay Brewing venue, out on the road toward the harbour, has become the default post-fishing feed with its beer paddles, pizzas and sprawling outdoor seating. Provisioning requires a trip into Esperance proper, about 10 kilometres away with no practical public transport link, where two supermarkets, pubs and the museum, home to a remarkable Skylab debris collection from 1979, cover most needs. The Esperance Bay Yacht Club in town is a separate facility with its own small marina, welcoming visiting yachts with showers and Friday-night meals. Weather is the watch item: in January 2007 a storm dubbed the perfect storm brought 110 km/h gusts and 155 millimetres of rain in 24 hours, destroying several boats locally, and Southern Ocean swell can make the approaches uncomfortable even in settled patterns. Cape Le Grand National Park and its Lucky Bay kangaroos lie about an hour east by road, which is why many cruising crews treat Bandy Creek as a week-long stop rather than an overnight one.
