Members sail and swim right through winter, so this is no fair-weather operation. Affiliated with Australian Sailing, the club mixes serious dinghy competition, grassroots teaching and community event-hosting in a way few small clubs manage.
Training and sailing programs
Most junior programs are funded by fees and grants; Indented Head's is partly funded by swimmers. Net proceeds from the club's Wreck2Reef open water swim go straight into the youth sail training effort, purchasing training yachts — Minnows, Optimists, Sabres and Lasers — along with safety equipment. That loop, where a community event bankrolls the next generation of sailors, sits at the core of how the club works. The teaching arm is the Learn2Sail program, open to kids aged seven to twelve and to adults, priced on a cost-recovery footing so fees stay deliberately low, with boats and equipment supported by Community Bank Bellarine. Instruction comes from Australian Sailing-qualified instructors, and the pathway is clearly stepped: a kids' and adults' introductory course, a Tiny-Kids Morning Program for five-to-ten-year-olds, then Learn2Sail 1 where children sail in pairs, Learn2Sail 2 where they go solo, and finally a Learn2Race squad introducing competitive sailing. Courses run either as seven-week series before or after Christmas or as four-to-five-day holiday programs totalling around fifteen hours on the water. From there, sailors graduate into Saturday afternoon club racing, which runs October to Easter in named series — the Ozone, Lady Nelson (incorporating the Red Cross Trophy) and Matthew Flinders series. The club also runs a Scouts Sailing Experience day, lends rescue boats and crews to neighbour clubs for events such as the A Class National Titles, and co-hosts the Sail Bellarine regatta with St Leonards Yacht Club, which in recent years has drawn ILCAs, OK Dinghies, Optimists, RS Aeros, Sabres and Tasars to Half Moon Bay.
Sailing waters
Half Moon Bay, the sweep of water fronting Indented Head, is a shallow, protected pocket of Port Phillip with little current and water clear enough that the club's swimmers describe it as some of the smoothest and safest on the bay. Tides barely register here, which makes launching and recovering dinghies off the sand a simple affair and keeps race courses consistent through the day. Look up from a beat and the view takes in Melbourne's skyline across the water, the shipping channel and the granite ridge of the You Yangs behind. The township itself carries real historical weight. Matthew Flinders named Indented Head in 1802, and John Batman came ashore nearby in 1835. Off the beach lies the sunken paddle steamer Ozone, sent down as a breakwater in 1925; her remains, known locally simply as the Wreck, anchor the annual Wreck2Reef swim that now helps fund the club's training fleet. Indented Head remains a seasonal camping town that swells each summer, and the camping ground next door to the club stays open across the sailing season, giving visiting families an easy regatta base. Club facilities are practical rather than grand: male and female changing rooms with hot showers, a canteen, a BYO bar, and an observation deck and sailors' lounge overlooking the course area. A Mobichair provides all-abilities access to the beach and water — fitting for a club whose swim program includes an All Abilities event. Altogether it adds up to a venue purpose-shaped for beach-launched dinghy sailing: flat water, soft sand, grass to rig on and a hot shower at the end.
Club history
Pinning down the birthdate of Indented Head Yacht Club is an honest puzzle. What the record shows clearly is that the club was active by 1978, because a class newsletter from September that year names it as host of the 1979 Victorian Australian Sailfish Championships. Beyond that, the trail goes quiet until formal incorporation: the club's ABN has been active since 1 November 1999. The gap is acknowledged rather than glossed — the formation of both the Indented Head Boat Club and the yacht club features in the permanent Rediscovering Indented Head's History exhibition mounted by the local community association at the Indented Head Community Hall in 2018, a sign that the town itself treats the club's origins as heritage worth preserving. Some traditions are easier to date. The Wreck2Reef open water swim was launched in 2010 as a joint venture between the Committee for Bellarine and the club, built around the 1925 wreck of the Ozone; by 2018 it had reached its ninth annual running, and recent editions have offered distances from a 2.5-kilometre feature swim down to a 300-metre dash for under-twelves, with a target of more than 400 competitors. A long-running Christmas regatta tradition is referenced by visiting sailors as far back as 2006. Results have put the club on the wider map, too. In 2023, Aidan Simmons — sailing for Indented Head and Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club — was named Victorian Youth Sailor of the Year after winning the ILCA 4 Australian National Championship and finishing as the top Australian at the ILCA 4 Youth Worlds. The club hosted the RS Aero Victorian State Championships in 2022 and the Victorian Fireball and OK Dinghy Championships in March 2026, under Commodore John Walter.
