About Shute Harbour Marina
Shute Harbour Marina describes a harbour in transition. Ten kilometres east of Airlie Beach through the rainforest of Conway National Park, Shute Harbour is a deep natural inlet that once ranked as Australia's second busiest commuter port, and today it hosts three distinct marine operations on its shores. The Whitsunday Regional Council's rebuilt marine terminal handles the ferry and tour trade; the privately owned Trinity Marine complex, home to Whitsunday Rent a Yacht, Sunsail Whitsundays and the Shute Harbour Slipway, runs one of the country's oldest bareboat charter fleets from its own jetty, moorings, workshop and haul-out yard; and on the northern side of the bay the approved Shute Harbour Marina Resort, a 350-million-dollar development some two decades in the approval pipeline, is set to add a 395-berth marina with berths from 10 to 45 metres sold on 99-year leases, resort dwellings with private berths, a hotel and a waterfront commercial precinct called Pier 61. The harbour itself justifies the investment: ringed by national park hills, it is one of the safest natural anchorages on the central Queensland coast and the closest mainland point to the Whitsunday Islands, with the first island anchorages barely four kilometres away. Cyclone Debbie tore through the old terminal in March 2017, and the 63.5-million-dollar rebuild that reopened in December 2021 gave the harbour a resilient new seawall and pontoons. Between the charter fleets, island ferries, water taxis and the fishing jetty, the water here rarely sits still, yet evenings return to rainforest quiet within minutes of the last ferry.
Marina facilities
Services at Shute Harbour are split across the public terminal and the private charter complex. The council terminal provides three finger pontoons with a range of casual berthing, a fuel facility serving commercial and private vessels, ticketing and baggage handling, retail space and the licensed 74 Islands Bar and Bistro with function space overlooking the bay, plus a public boat ramp on Shute Harbour Road and a free recreational fishing jetty known locally for tropical species and squid. Parking comes in two council-run car parks with long-term options, card payment only. The Trinity Marine complex adds the working side of the harbour: Whitsunday Rent a Yacht's bareboat fleet of sailing yachts, catamarans and power cats (no boat licence required in the Whitsundays, with three-to-four-hour briefings, optional sail guides and daily radio scheds), Sunsail Whitsundays charter yachts, and the Shute Harbour Slipway, which hauls and maintains cruising yachts, commercial vessels and the charter fleets in its own yard. Charter guests get free use of the complex's jetty and moorings during their hire, including pre-departure sleep-aboards, and provisioning companies and supermarkets deliver direct to the jetty. The coming Marina Resort development is planned to layer in a marina cafe and bar, marina club, supermarket, bottle shop, chandlery, marine electronics and charter tenancies, a community cyclone shelter and an Indigenous cultural heritage centre, though construction staging remains subject to the consortium's program. Until then, Airlie Beach's Coral Sea Marina and Port of Airlie, ten minutes away, carry most superyacht and large-vessel needs. Whitsunday Transit buses connect the harbour with Cannonvale, Airlie Beach and Jubilee Pocket for crew changes, and secure long-term vehicle storage can be arranged through local parking operators.
Local sailing knowledge
Shute Harbour's geography is its gift: the islands begin almost at the harbour mouth. Whitsunday Rent a Yacht promotes the fact that the nearest overnight anchorage is just four kilometres out, so a charter crew can clear the jetty and be at anchor within the hour, and the harbour sits about two hours closer to the islands than Airlie Beach departure points. Ferries run to Hamilton Island in about 35 minutes, Daydream Island in 50 and Long Island in 20, with Cruise Whitsundays, SeaLink, Ocean Rafting and other operators sharing the terminal pontoons. Navigating in is simple in any weather through a wide, deep entrance between the headlands, though the bay holds several hundred swing moorings that demand care after dark. Fishing from the terminal's pontoon jetty is a legitimate evening's entertainment, and trolling the passage toward the islands produces Spanish mackerel from May to October. Ashore, the harbour is wrapped in Conway National Park: the drive from Airlie Beach winds through rainforest, Lion's Lookout above the terminal gives the classic view over Whitsunday Passage, and walking tracks lace the hills. There is no town at Shute Harbour, no supermarket or pub beyond the terminal cafe, so provisioning happens in Cannonvale or Airlie Beach before arrival. The harbour takes its name from Shute Island, 500 metres off the headland, charted by HMS Alert in 1881, and the sheltered anchorage served the Whitsunday tourism industry from its earliest launch days decades before the first marina pontoon was floated. Cyclone season concentrates minds here from November to April, when charter limits, weather routing and the region's designated cyclone anchorages become part of every skipper's planning.
