About Strahan Harbour berthing (TasPorts)
Strahan Harbour's recreational berthing sits within one of Australia's great natural harbours: Macquarie Harbour, some 50 kilometres of sheltered water on Tasmania's west coast, six times the size of Sydney Harbour and second only to Port Phillip among the nation's natural harbours. The berths lie near the cruise boat wharves on the Strahan waterfront, arranged through TasPorts rather than a marina operator, and they serve larger visiting vessels that cannot or would rather not anchor off the town. The setting is a frontier-era port reinvented by tourism. Strahan boomed in the 1890s as the shipping outlet for the Zeehan silver-lead field and later Queenstown's copper, with steamers racing each other to Melbourne and a railway built to carry ore to the wharves; the same waterfront now berths the big catamarans of Gordon River Cruises and World Heritage Cruises, seaplanes, and the yacht Stormbreaker of West Coast Yacht Charters. Around them a small town of pubs, bakeries and galleries serves visitors bound for the Gordon River, Sarah Island and the West Coast Wilderness Railway from Regatta Point. For cruising boats the harbour berthing is the west coast's one reliable alongside option: Macquarie Harbour is a long detour from anywhere, the entrance at Hells Gates filters out casual traffic, and the vessels that do arrive, circumnavigators working down from Strahan's north or up from Port Davey, tend to stay several days. Marina facilities
Berthing for larger boats near the cruise boat wharves is arranged directly with TasPorts, contactable on 1300 366 742; there is no online booking and no permanent recreational pens, so the system is phone-ahead casual berthing on port infrastructure shared with commercial tour operators. Fuel is available on the waterfront, and MAST's cruising notes specifically flag fuel access here alongside the berthing. For trailer boats, Strahan runs three public ramps: one at Meredith Street, one on The Esplanade and one at the Heads near the camping ground, and MAST suggests towing with a near-empty tank and fuelling in Strahan to save weight on the long road in. Beyond that, the harbour relies on the town. A well-stocked IGA supermarket and pharmacy sit up the hill from the wharf, a bakery and a pub stand on the foreshore, and there is a laundromat, car hire, and restaurants from pub meals to Risby Cove's waterfront dining. The Crays shop on the Esplanade sells Trevor Norton's detailed Macquarie Harbour and Gordon River charts, which local skippers consider near-essential for the anchorages. There is no boatyard, slipway, pump-out or chandlery at Strahan; the nearest haul-out capability is far away on the coast, so west coast cruisers arrive self-sufficient or not at all. A working sawmill beside the wharf still processes salvaged Huon pine, and the cruise terminals berth here, which means the wharves are busy from early morning with tour boats and seaplanes. Visiting skippers should expect to coordinate movements around the cruise catamarans' schedules, and to report to TasPorts on arrival for berth allocation and any port charges.
Local sailing knowledge
Getting here is half the story. Macquarie Harbour's only entrance is Hells Gates, named by convicts bound for Sarah Island, a narrow gut directly exposed to Southern Ocean swell where outflow depends on wind, barometric pressure and Gordon River dam releases as much as tide: south winds increase the flow, north winds ease it, and heavy rain amplifies it. The standing rules are to study the chart, favour the rock training wall side, keep off the abrupt Kawatiri Shoals to the east, expect a minimum depth of about four metres near the wall's end, and never attempt it after dark. Pilot Bay, just inside Cape Sorell's lee, is the accepted waiting anchorage while conditions settle. Inside the gates the harbour opens into nearly 20 miles of cruising water. Approaching Strahan, locate the number 12 red marker on the submerged reef off Town Point before shaping for the wharves; grounding there is a local tradition best avoided. Anchorages abound for those who leave the berth: Risby Cove off the town in mud, Mill Bay, Pine Cove with its piners' camp remnants, and down-harbour the Farm Cove and Kelly Basin anchorages near the Gordon River mouth, Birches Inlet for all-wind shelter, and Double Cove in westerlies. The Gordon River itself, with a five-knot limit and cruise boats as far as Heritage Landing, is the highlight run. Ashore, Strahan offers the railway to Queenstown, the longest-running play in Australia at the amphitheatre, and 40 kilometres of Ocean Beach six minutes away.
