About Sutherland Dock Berths (Cockatoo Island)

Sutherland Dock Berths is surely the only marina in Australia where your berth sits inside a nineteenth-century graving dock. The dock was built between 1882 and 1890 to supplement the smaller, convict-dug Fitzroy Dock alongside, at a time when the colonial government decided Cockatoo Island needed capacity for the largest naval and merchant ships then afloat. It was constructed by free labour under a young engineer, Louis Samuel, who died in 1887 aged just 26, with the work finished under his brother Edward; when the caisson gate closed in 1890, Sutherland Dock was briefly the largest dry dock in the world. The dock's working life tracked the nation's naval history: modified in 1913 to take the battle cruiser HMAS Australia, again in 1927 for the cruisers Australia and Canberra, lengthened in 1928 from 635 to 680 feet, and worked flat out through two world wars when Cockatoo Island was the main ship repair facility in the southwest Pacific. Shipbuilding on the island wound down in the early 1990s, and the dock has since been returned to a gentler maritime purpose: floating pontoons now line its walls, turning the stone chamber into a small, profoundly sheltered marina. For a berth holder the setting is pure theatre, sheer sandstone walls, World Heritage-listed convict ruins overhead, dockyard cranes on the skyline, and almost no wash or swell, since a vessel inside the dock is sealed off from harbour chop. Alongside, Sutherland Wharf takes far bigger vessels, up to 50 metres, giving Sydney one of its few large-vessel berthing options this close to the city. It is operated by the Cockatoo Boat Storage team under the Harbour Trust umbrella, and contracts include free tender transfers to the island from pick-up points around the harbour.

Marina facilities

The berthing product is split into two parts. Inside the dry dock itself, floating pontoons with power and water accommodate boats to 80 feet, and the protection is total: no fetch, no ferry wash, no surge, which makes the dock berths prized for long-term storage afloat of timber classics and other craft owners would rather not leave on an exposed marina arm. Berthing contracts include free transfers to Cockatoo Island on the operator's tender service from a range of harbour pick-up points, solving the access problem that an island location otherwise poses; owners simply park on the mainland side and are ferried across. For larger vessels, Sutherland Wharf provides berthing to 50 metres, described by the operator as among the largest berthing available in Sydney Harbour, and it has hosted everything from tall ships to superyachts visiting for island events. Additional hardstand storage is available behind the wharves for boats that prefer to be out of the water. Practical services are arranged through the Cockatoo Boat Storage and Cockatoo Island Marine Centre team on 02 9940 0172: they coordinate the island's on-site marine trades, covering mechanical, electrical, shipwright, fibreglass, detailing and brightwork, can perform survey lifts on boats to 33 feet, arrange tow-ins for vessels that cannot make the trip themselves, and handle vinyl wrapping and brokerage enquiries. There is no fuel wharf or chandlery on the island, and the berths are contract rather than casual; short-stay visitors are directed to the Camber Wharf visitor marina on the other side of the island. Amenities such as toilets, showers and laundry are available in conjunction with the island's visitor facilities near the slipway during office hours. Security is inherent to the site: a staffed island with 24-hour security and controlled water access is about as secure as berthing gets in Sydney.

Local sailing knowledge

Getting a boat into Sutherland Dock is straightforward but theatrical: you motor up the main harbour or down the Parramatta River to the island's northeastern corner, and the dock entrance opens directly off deep water with no bar, bridge or lock to negotiate. The surrounding lane is working water, so watch for RiverCats, ferries and barge traffic, and remember that inside the dock the wind drops to nothing, handy for single-handed berthing. The island's position, three kilometres from the Harbour Bridge and minutes from Darling Harbour, Barangaroo and Balmain, makes it one of the most central berths on the harbour, and the free tender transfers mean mainland logistics are painless. Once secured, berth holders effectively have the run of a World Heritage site after the day visitors leave: sunset drinks on the upper island, the convict precinct and tunnel walks, and the Marina Cafe and Bar near Camber Wharf for a meal without untying. The island's two licensed cafes cover breakfast through dinner on busy days, and ice and sundries are available at the Visitor Centre; serious provisioning is done on the mainland, with Woolwich, Drummoyne and Balmain the closest shopping. For cruising, the dock is a perfect base for the inner harbour anchorages, Lane Cove River upstream, Athol and Chowder Bays to the east, and the island is a legendary spot to watch the New Year's Eve fireworks, with special berthing packages sold well ahead. Historically minded visitors should know that the neighbouring Fitzroy Dock, completed in 1857, is the only surviving convict-built dry dock in the country, and both docks feature in the island's guided tours. The one real constraint is that this is a heritage precinct first and a marina second: works like the current Bolt Wharf conservation project periodically reshape access, and events can restrict berthing, so check ahead.
