About Sylvania Marina
Sylvania Marina occupies a working waterfront pocket at 25 Harrow Street, Sylvania, on the southern shore of the Georges River just west of Tom Uglys Bridge. It is one of the Sutherland Shire's longest-serving boating addresses: Clement Marine built the original 24 floating berths here in 1995, and the site grew into a roughly 60-66 berth floating marina taking vessels to 40 feet, backed by a cluster of marine trades, shipwrights, electricians, marine trimmers and brokerages, that made it a genuine service hub for the lower Georges River. In recent years the marina has been trading under new ownership as Kalevu Marina, a Fijian-inflected name meaning chief of the coast, with an upgrade program reshaping the site into a one-stop fuel, repair and lifestyle facility complete with jet ski docks and a daily kiosk. The clientele is practical rather than polished: Shire families with cruisers and runabouts, fishing boats working Botany Bay, and a steady flow of maintenance customers hauling on the slipway. That trade bench is the marina's real distinction, because full-service yards this far up the Georges River are few, and Sylvania's combination of berthing, fuelling, slipping and on-site workmanship has kept local boats out of the long trek to harbour-side boatyards for three decades. Freedom Boat Club has chosen the site for its Sydney South franchise, due to open ahead of the 2026-27 season. The rebrand has kept the working character intact while softening the edges, with the upgrade pitched at making the marina feel like a small waterfront community rather than a pure industrial yard.
Marina facilities
The marina offers 66 private floating berths for boats to 40 feet (12.2 metres), available permanently or for shorter stays, with 24-hour access, round-the-clock security and monitoring across the site. Alongside sit 20 dedicated jet ski docks offered on short or long-term lease, aimed at riders who want to fuel and go without trailers or ramp queues. A fuel berth open seven days dispenses diesel and unleaded petrol on a fill-and-go basis. The yard's workhorse is one of the district's only EPA-approved slipways, handling vessels to 40 feet, and the on-site trade bench covers mechanical repairs and servicing, chandlery sales and spare parts, electronics supply including Raymarine and Furuno, and insurance repair work. Lifestyle Boating, run by Sean and his team, operates from the marina as a full detailing, antifouling, shipwright, skippering, custom fit-out and boat sales operation, and two commercial slipway spaces have been marketed for lease to additional marine businesses. A kiosk trades 9am to 4.30pm seven days with drinks and snacks for berth holders and slipway customers. The announced arrival of Freedom Boat Club's Sydney South fleet will add a membership boating operation on site, giving non-owners access to a maintained fleet from the same pontoons. Taken together, the facility now functions as the Georges River's most complete small-boat service centre west of the bay, with berthing, fuel, slipping, repairs, brokerage and boat club access in one address. The combination of fuel, slipping and trades in one stop is unusual on this stretch of river and is the reason boats from across the Shire trailer or motor in for work rather than crossing to harbour marinas.
Local sailing knowledge
The marina sits on the lower Georges River just inside Tom Uglys Bridge, the twin road spans carrying the Princes Highway between Blakehurst and Sylvania; masted vessels must check their air draft against the bridge before heading upriver toward Picnic Point and Liverpool, while downstream the run to Botany Bay takes under half an hour in a planing boat. Kogarah Bay, with its sailing clubs and the St George Motor Boat Club marina, lies immediately east, and the Georges River channel past Towra Point gives access to the open bay and the coast. In the other direction, the river winds through Georges River National Park toward Como and Oatley, a sheltered cruising ground of bushland banks, baths and picnic spots that feels far removed from suburbia. Fishing is a year-round proposition: bream and flathead on the flats, mulloway around the bridge pylons for the patient, and prawns in the river on dark summer nights. Towra Point Aquatic Reserve, across the bay, demands care with its protected shallows and no-wash zones. Ashore, Southgate shopping centre and Sylvania's restaurants are minutes away for provisioning, and the Shire's foreshore reserves at Carss Bush Park and Lugarno make easy picnic stops by boat. Weekend ramp traffic at nearby foreshores is heavy in summer, one more reason berth holders here value simply stepping aboard. For visitors, the marina is an easy half-hour run from the Captain Cook Bridge and a comfortable day trip from Sydney Harbour itself, making it a handy service stop on any south-coast itinerary.
