Tucked up Snapper Creek on Emperor Street, d'Albora Tin Can Bay Marina is the sheltered southern bookend of Great Sandy Strait cruising and, since February 2026, part of Australia's largest marina network. The marina holds 172 wet berths from 9 to over 20 metres for monohulls and multihulls, wrapped by a full-service boatyard, a small waterfront village of ten self-contained villas, a chandlery and dockside dining. Its character comes from its position: Tin Can Bay town is an easy walk away, the creek is protected in almost any weather, and the cruising grounds of the strait and K'gari's western shore begin the moment you clear the leads. The facility grew with the town's fishing and boating culture and was long run as an independent family-style operation before d'Albora, backed by parent MA Financial Group, acquired it in early 2026 as part of a south-east Queensland expansion, promising continuity of services plus network member benefits over time. Cruisers heading up or down the Queensland coast treat it as a natural pause point - one of the few genuinely all-weather stops between the Gold Coast and Bundaberg - and many boats left here for a cyclone season have a way of staying for years. The mix of permanent berth-holders, grey nomads towing tinnies, charter fishers and visiting yachts gives the marina an easygoing, lived-in feel. The creek-side setting also means the operation stays compact and walkable - fuel jetty, boatyard, chandlery, villas and grill all sit within a few minutes of any berth - and the absence of high-rise or highway noise keeps the focus squarely on boats. Berthing covers casual, short-term and long-term stays across the 172 berths, with power and water at the pontoons, 24-hour security, wifi via Marinanet, showers and a laundry; swing moorings add a cheaper storage option, and dock staff work seven days assisting with berthing and refuelling. The fuel jetty dispenses around the clock, seven days a week - a genuine asset on this stretch of coast - and a holding-tank pump-out is available. The boatyard is a serious regional facility: a 30-tonne travel lift serves a hardstand with spray booths, and the work list spans antifouling, routine servicing, mechanical and electrical repairs, refits, detailing and shipwright work, backed by onsite marine contractors and a boat brokerage. The chandlery beside the hardstand stocks marine electronics, LED lighting, bait, ice and fishing tackle along with general boating gear, and gas bottles are filled onsite. Accommodation is built into the operation: Tin Can Bay Villas offers ten two-bedroom waterfront units, each sleeping four with full kitchen, laundry and balcony, plus a lagoon-style saltwater pool and barbecue area, bookable by boaters and non-boaters alike. Dockside dining is handled by the Marina Grill, serving breakfast and lunch over the water to marina guests, villa guests and the public. The approach defines the Tin Can Bay experience. From seaward you cross the Wide Bay Bar - a shifting, respected entrance best taken on a rising tide in settled conditions, with current waypoints and advice available from Coast Guard Tin Can Bay on VHF channel 80 - then work up Tin Can Inlet past Pelican Bay to the marked Snapper Creek channel. Anchoring inside the creek is not permitted, so visiting boats book a berth or pick up a mooring; the marina monitors VHF and sits about five miles up from the inlet mouth in water that is protected from every quarter. Once inside, the strait opens north for over 30 miles of sheltered sailing to Hervey Bay, with K'gari's western beaches, Kingfisher Bay and the Mary River mouth as side trips; Great Sandy Marine Park zoning applies, so check the green zones before dropping a pot or a line. Town supplies everything a cruising crew needs within a kilometre - supermarket, bakery, chemist, pub and the famous morning dolphin feeding at Norman Point beside the public ramp. Fishing is the local obsession: mud crabs in the creek arms, flathead and whiting over the flats, and tailor off the surf beaches toward Double Island Point. The marina is about as far south as many Whitsundays-bound cruisers care to stop in winter, which keeps the berths busy from April to October; book ahead in that window, especially for multihull spaces.
