Few Australian sailing clubs can point to a trophy older than organised racing on their home waters, yet the silverware at the heart of Wynnum Manly Sailing Club's season was crafted in England in 1890. The sterling cup originally rewarded marksmen at a rifle-shooting contest held on St Helena Island, Moreton Bay's former penal settlement, and it entered yachting when member Mick Patterson offered it from his family's collection. Patterson, together with Stan Davey and Rod Florence, had conceived a teams regatta modelled on the Admiral's Cup, first sailed in 1976; half a century later, in 2025, the St Helena Cup marked its fiftieth anniversary with the club as proud custodian of the event. Around that anchor sits a club with an unusually clear purpose. Wynnum Manly Sailing Club describes itself as a friendly, inclusive organisation devoted to safe and enjoyable yacht racing on Moreton Bay — racing is the whole brief, and the club makes no apology for it.
