Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club makes its home at Boreen Point, on the lake's western shore, in the Noosa hinterland on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. It is one of Australian sailing's genuine survivors: Australian Sailing's 2023 Club in Focus feature noted that, established in 1946, the club has kept the same easy-going spirit for more than 75 years — and the club is now documenting its story for an 80th anniversary planned for February 2026. Only a handful of Australian sailing clubs can point to eight unbroken decades on the same stretch of water. Everything here runs on volunteer labour. The club states that all on- and off-water operations are handled by members on a volunteer basis, and its membership exceeds 300 — a figure that has roughly doubled since the 175 members recorded at the 50th anniversary in 1996, with junior training cited as the driver of that growth. The sailing is lake sailing of a particular kind. Cootharaba is Queensland's largest coastal lake, a broad, shallow, tidal sheet of water in the Noosa River system, and the club credits the lake's predominant sea breezes with producing flat-water conditions it rates among the finest anywhere.
