Sailing club

Every Wednesday afternoon in season, a scatter of cruising yachts musters off one of Australia's most famous resort islands, and the crews stepping aboard range from first-timers to a former Olympian. This is the Cruising Yacht Club of Hamilton Island — CYCHI — a volunteer-run community club in the Whitsundays whose weekly twilight racing draws what a Hamilton Island magazine profile called "a merry band of first-timers and seasoned sailors alike": typically 40 to 60 sailors spread across roughly ten boats of varying sizes. The club's inclusive streak is its defining trait. The regatta invitation reads "All Yachts Welcome — Big or Small," and the fleet proves it: a past regatta field ran from an 8-metre trimaran up to a Hanse 505. Crewing is gloriously informal — locals hop aboard as invited crew, and local resident Bruce Absolon's 60-foot Spirit of the Naid often sails with more than twenty people on board. Few sailing clubs anywhere operate like Hamilton Island Yacht Club. Run by the Oatley family via its company Hamilton Island Enterprises, it functions without flag officers or committees, and per Sailing World its membership in 2014 stood at about twenty-five people — prompting the magazine to call it "quite obviously not your average club". Bob Oatley, the family patriarch, held the title of commodore. What the club lacks in member numbers it makes up in architectural presence. The clubhouse on the marina's edge, created by architect Walter Barda, drawing on ideas from yachtsman Iain Murray, wears a billowing copper roof shaped like a sail, its palette drawn from full sails and the colours of the reef, and it has been likened so often to the Sydney Opera House that one travel outlet dubbed it the Opera House of far north Queensland. Queensland Premier Anna Bligh officially opened the building in August 2009, during Audi Hamilton Island Race Week.
