Sailing club

Metung is one of those Gippsland Lakes villages where the water is the main street, and Metung Yacht Club sits at the centre of it. Based on the Bancroft Bay shoreline at Metung, some 260 kilometres east of Melbourne, the club has been sailing on Lake King and Bancroft Bay since 1934 — ninety years of continuous club life on the same sheltered waters. It is a sailing and boating club in the full sense: the membership spans sailors and power boaters, and the calendar mixes racing and cruising events with twilight sailing and social cruises. The club's reputation in Australian keelboat circles rests on its championship hosting. The Prince Philip Cup — the Australasian championship of the International Dragon class — came to Metung in January 2018 and returned in January 2024, when Nick Rogers claimed his thirteenth Cup title. The International Flying Dutchman national titles and the East Gippsland Etchells Championships also run from the club, and Dragon sailors speak warmly of the venue's flat water and reliable summer sea breezes.
