Sailing club

On a peninsula poking into the southern shore of Brisbane Water, Saratoga Sailing Club goes about its Sundays much as it has since 1972: rig on the foreshore, race on the estuary, then gather upstairs at the clubhouse where, as the club gently advises, you should "bring some gold coins for the social afterwards". It describes itself as "friendly and competitive", and both halves check out. New sailors of any age or experience are welcomed, members of other clubs are invited across for regatta days, and casual sailors can slot into the Sunday rhythm without a season-long commitment. The fleet mix is the club's signature quirk. Few Australian clubs put a Hartley TS16 trailer sailer — a plywood family design drawn in 1960 — on the same stretch of water as foiling International A-Class catamarans, with Lasers, other small dinghies and windsurfers in between. Heritage and cutting edge share the start line here, which says a lot about the membership: loyal to the boats they grew up with, curious about whatever sails fastest.
