Sailing club

Lake Macquarie has supported sailing clubs for well over a century, and Speers Point Amateur Sailing Club carries one of the oldest pedigrees on the lake, with roots reaching back to at least 1905. The club began on the point now known as Shipbuilders and today occupies a corner of Speers Point Park at Lake Macquarie's northern end, where the green space, the wide ramps and the long view across the water make it natural off-the-beach territory. There are no keelboats here — the location dictates the fleet, and the fleet is dinghies and catamarans. The modern club is a study in steady, volunteer-driven growth. Membership sat just under 120 in 2023 — thirty senior, twenty-three junior, twenty family and eleven SailPass members among them — with numbers climbing on the back of the junior and Friday twilight programs even during the COVID years. Female membership reached 34 per cent, and the club says plainly it wants that figure higher. The sailing fleet numbers 73 boats, 28 of them catamarans and 45 monohulls, and a healthy share of non-sailing members keeps race operations running. Recognition has followed.
