Sailing club

Here is a sailing club with no racing calendar, and it would not have it any other way. Officially the Urunga Sail Training Club, this not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation claims to be the North Coast's only not-for-profit sailing school certified by Australian Sailing as a Small Boat Sailing School. Its purpose is teaching: getting children, adults, women returning to the water and people of all abilities into small boats on the calm rivers where the Bellinger and Kalang meet the sea. The club is family-oriented and deliberately low-pressure. Owning a boat is not required — the club maintains its own training boats, which experienced sailing members can use — and the social high point of the week is the Coffee Run, a gentle sail downriver from the Atherton Drive beach to the village of Mylestom on a Sunday morning, weather and tides permitting. It is sailing as recreation and skill-building rather than competition, which makes Urunga a natural first port of call for anyone on the Coffs Coast who has always wanted to learn.
