Sailing club

Three hundred kilometres inland from the Tasman, sailing in the Riverina happens on an artificial lake beside a regional city, and Wagga Wagga Sailing Club has kept the sport alive there for decades. With around forty members and twenty to twenty-five of them racing regularly, this is one of the few sailing clubs operating in inland south-western New South Wales, an incorporated association affiliated with Australian Sailing and listed in the national directory as an inland dinghy club offering racing and training on Lake Albert. Numbers that size make for a particular kind of club culture, and Wagga's version is deliberately open-handed: visitors are welcome to simply turn up, bring their own boat or use one of the club's, and crew positions are available for those without a boat at all. For a newcomer in a town with no coastline, that door-on-the-latch policy is the whole game.
