Based at Manly on Moreton Bay, the club styles itself, in its own directory listings, as the country's leading multihull club, and points to a membership that has counted most of the country's principal multihull designers, builders and industry figures among its ranks, together with sailors holding championships, world voyages and Australian and world circumnavigations. The claim rests on real substance: the modern club was formed in 2001 by amalgamating south-east Queensland's various multihull groups, whose roots reach back to 1965, when a dozen multihull owners first organised to race their own Brisbane to Gladstone. Newport Cruising Yacht Club occupies the sociable end of Redcliffe Peninsula sailing, and it does so by design: a community club that sails from Scarborough and the Newport canal estate and states plainly that it promotes social interaction and family participation. When Bowen sailors gathered for a public meeting in March 1950, they set out to create something their town had never had: a dedicated cruising yacht club for North Queensland, headquartered at Bowen and affiliated with the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club. The ambition on the table that night was anything but modest — harbour contests, weekend passages across to the Whitsunday Passage, and, in time, genuine ocean racing. Oxley Sailing Club, which races on the Brisbane River's Indooroopilly Reach in the city's south-west, has been racing against its old friends at South Brisbane Sailing Club since the 1921–22 season — a contest that has moved through sixteen-foot skiffs, Mirrors, Herons, Pacers and Lasers, and that today produces one of the more charming trophies in Australian dinghy sailing. The Nose and Tail Trophy, created in 2000 from a Laser hull cut into three pieces, sees the bow and the stern contested each year by teams alternating between the two clubs, with Oxley holding the silverware in 2023.
