A death on the water, rather than a race or a regatta, brought Sandgate Yacht Club into being. After two sailors drowned when their boat capsized during an informal contest near the Brisbane River mouth in November 1911, the local community resolved to organise sailing properly, and the club was founded on 14 February 1912 to give the sport a disciplined home on Bramble Bay. By its own account it is the oldest established boating club in Sandgate and among the most senior sailing clubs in Queensland, and it still occupies the same waterfront strip at 95 Allpass Parade in Shorncliffe, on Cabbage Tree Creek's northern side near where the creek enters the bay. The club describes itself as a community icon of the Sandgate and Shorncliffe bayside, and the claim rests on more than longevity: since its inception it has maintained a safety and rescue operation that has looked after sailors and the wider public alike, a commitment that eventually grew into a separate volunteer marine rescue organisation. Few sailing clubs anywhere in Australia sit as close to a capital city's centre as South Brisbane Sailing Club. Its weatherboard clubhouse stands beside Orleigh Park in West End, on a bend of the Brisbane River barely three kilometres upstream from the CBD, and the distance from the back of the building to the water's edge is less than 16 feet. The club traces its beginnings to 1903, which by its own reckoning makes it Queensland's third-oldest sailing club, and it has spent more than a century as a family-based dinghy club racing on the same river reaches. The current membership sits at just over 100, a figure that stabilised after a dip following the 2011 flood, and the club points with some satisfaction to its composition: around 45 per cent female participation and roughly a quarter juniors and youth. Queensland's largest yacht club (est. 1946) with a 300-berth marina at Main Beach and dedicated superyacht berths including Australia's largest floating megayacht berth for vessels to 135m. The Anglican boys' college occupies a riverside campus on the Nerang River at Southport, its senior school on Winchester Street and its preparatory school on Lupus Street, and the co-curricular program runs from early learning through to Year 12. Four hundred and twenty kilometres from the nearest coastline, a sailing regatta runs each winter on a dam in Queensland's coal country — and the host is a water-ski club. Theresa Creek Water Sports Club Inc is a community water-sports organisation based at Theresa Creek Dam, also known as Lake Theresa, near Clermont in the Isaac Region of Central Queensland. Water skiing is the club's primary sport, with jet skiing close behind; by any ordinary measure it would not belong in a book of sailing clubs at all. What changed that was the Clermont Outback Regatta. The idea surfaced in August 2021, when the Clermont Community Business Group floated a sailing event on the dam and teamed up with the club to make it real; with guidance from Australian Sailing and the practical muscle of Keppel Bay Sailing Club from Yeppoon, the inaugural regatta ran in August 2023 — an occasion the national body characterised as bringing sailing to the bush. The race came first; the club followed six weeks later. When the first running of the Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay Race drew 118 yachts over the May Day long weekend of 1981, the sailors involved decided the town needed a permanent organisation, and on 28 June 1981 Tin Can Bay Yacht Club Inc was officially formed. Four decades on, the club occupies a waterfront position at Norman Point, on the tidal shores of Snapper Creek where Tin Can Inlet opens toward the southern reaches of the Great Sandy Strait — some of the most sheltered cruising water on the Queensland coast. That shelter shaped the membership from the beginning: in the club's early years, Noosa sailors who could not manage keelboats on the shallow Noosa River brought their boats north to Tin Can Bay instead. The annual Bay to Bay, as the founding race is now known, grew at extraordinary speed — 162 entries in 1982 and 204 in 1983 — and was described at the time as the second-largest event of its kind in Australia, behind only Victoria's Marley Point Lakes Race. Most Queensland sailing clubs answer to the tide; this one answers to an irrigation release. Tinaroo Sailing Club races on Lake Tinaroo, a vast freshwater storage on the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland, high above the coastal sailing its state is famous for. The lake itself has a civic claim to fame — it was Queensland's first big irrigation dam, completed in 1958 and filled the following year — and sailors were afloat on it almost immediately, with two boats recorded on the water in 1960. On 21 October 1895, at a meeting at Picnic Bay, a group of north Queensland sailors resolved to establish a sailing club bearing Townsville's name — a decision reported the very next day in the Brisbane Courier. That makes Townsville Sailing Club — by its own account — among the oldest clubs in the city and among the oldest sailing clubs anywhere in the state, and its long story is anything but smooth: name changes, breakaway fleets, a Depression, a lost clubhouse and more than one complete rebuild. Through it all the club has stayed loyal to one thing, stated plainly on its own pages: dinghy sailing is its specialty. Few Australian sailing clubs leave as faint a trace on the internet as Upper Cabbage Tree Creek Yacht Club. There is no club website to browse, no Facebook page to scroll, and no newspaper archive recording its races — a researcher in January 2026 found essentially nothing beyond official registers. What those registers do show is a small, genuine, affiliated sailing club on Brisbane's northern fringe. The club holds an Australian Business Number (79 435 915 072) as an unincorporated entity, active from 20 August 2020, with the business name registered a day later; it is not registered for GST, which fits a volunteer-run outfit of modest turnover. Sailing in Queensland usually means salt water — coral seas, tidal estuaries, bay racing within sight of surf beaches. Warwick Sailing Club does things differently. Its home water is Lake Leslie, a freshwater storage on the Condamine River near Warwick in the Southern Downs, a district better known for cattle country, grain and winter frosts than for spinnakers. Perched on the point at Airlie Beach, with Pioneer Bay spread out in front of the clubhouse, Whitsunday Sailing Club occupies some of the most envied sailing real estate in North Queensland. Locals, the club reports, call it the best spot in town — and this is a town that lives by the water. Airlie Beach is the mainland gateway to the Whitsunday Islands, and the club has spent more than half a century turning that geography into a sailing life: founded in 1971, it now sits in Australian Sailing's category 12 band as a Category A club, a bracket that reflects a substantial operation. The waterfront site packs in a restaurant and bar trading seven days, function rooms, a marina, a hardstand and a dinghy harbour, and the weddings-and-functions business makes full use of the sunsets over the bay. Few Australian sailing clubs can point to a trophy older than organised racing on their home waters, yet the silverware at the heart of Wynnum Manly Sailing Club's season was crafted in England in 1890. The sterling cup originally rewarded marksmen at a rifle-shooting contest held on St Helena Island, Moreton Bay's former penal settlement, and it entered yachting when member Mick Patterson offered it from his family's collection. Patterson, together with Stan Davey and Rod Florence, had conceived a teams regatta modelled on the Admiral's Cup, first sailed in 1976; half a century later, in 2025, the St Helena Cup marked its fiftieth anniversary with the club as proud custodian of the event.
