That philosophy, deliberately low-cost and open, has defined the club since twenty-eight people founded it in a technical school library in 1973. Racing is based at the St Helens Marina precinct on Corio Bay's northern shore at East Geelong, with courses built from the club's own marks and buoys and the start and finish near the marina. The fleet covers trailable yachts and small ramp-launched keelboats, and the club is emphatic that you don't need to own a boat to belong: owners regularly look for crew, and visitors are welcome to sail a handful of races before being asked to join. One winter evening in August 1854, eight men met for dinner at the Goolwa Hotel to organise a party — marking the first anniversary of the day the local shipyard's first cargo vessel was launched. From that dinner, the club traces its origin, and on the strength of a formation as the Goolwa Regatta Club some time before August 1854 it claims the title of Australia's oldest continuously operating yacht club — a claim repeated by Australian Sailing but belonging to the club itself. Run by the Oatley family via its company Hamilton Island Enterprises, it functions without flag officers or committees, and per Sailing World its membership in 2014 stood at about twenty-five people — prompting the magazine to call it "quite obviously not your average club".
