When Bowen sailors gathered for a public meeting in March 1950, they set out to create something their town had never had: a dedicated cruising yacht club for North Queensland, headquartered at Bowen and affiliated with the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club. The ambition on the table that night was anything but modest — harbour contests, weekend passages across to the Whitsunday Passage, and, in time, genuine ocean racing.
