When Australian Sailing handed out its 2024 national awards, one South Australian club collected three of them. Adelaide Sailing Club won Club of the Year in Category A, earned the Sports Promotion award for its staging of the 2024 ILCA World Championship regatta, and watched members Peter Royle and Malcolm Hughes named Volunteers of the Year. On the club's own count it was a fourth national honour in six years, following four at state level, and in November that year Australian Sailing turned its Club in Focus spotlight on the organisation. ASC itself dates only from 1998, when Holdfast Bay Yacht Club and Glenelg Sailing Club, two venerable Glenelg institutions, amalgamated as part of the Holdfast Shores redevelopment, though the roots of those predecessors reach back to the 1870s and 1880s. ASC's own description is of a beach-launching club that also provides keelboat facilities, and the sailing it supports bears that out: senior monohulls, multihulls, sports boats, trailerables, junior racing and Sailability all find a home under its burgee, a quartered red-and-yellow flag divided by a white-edged blue cross. Sailing club

From its two-storey clubroom on the foreshore, Arno Bay Yacht Club reckons it enjoys a vantage point almost no other club can match. By its own account it belongs to a tiny handful of clubs anywhere where racing can be watched close-up from the clubhouse itself — a claim that says plenty about how intimate sailing is at this small Spencer Gulf port. Arno Bay sits on the eastern side of Eyre Peninsula, close to halfway between Whyalla to the north and Port Lincoln to the south. The yacht club is affiliated with Yachting SA, recognised as a sporting organisation within the District Council of Cleve, and run, in its own words, by a small and dedicated band of volunteers. It is a smoke-free club and a participant in the Good Sports program, with bar and catering duties organised through member rosters and a clubroom available for hire. Summer racing runs each Sunday, and visitors are expressly welcome. The club logo says it plainly: Est 1919. Brighton & Seacliff Yacht Club has been sailing off the same stretch of Adelaide coastline for more than a century, and it carries that seniority with some swagger — the club bills itself as Adelaide's leading off-the-beach sailing club and operates as a function centre, a sailing and aquatics school and a community hub, with two bars and a bistro on site. The scale of the operation backs the confidence. Racing is supported by as many as eight powerboats, two tractors for beach launching and a fleet of club-owned sailing boats, and the class list is one of the longest in the state, running from Sabres, 505s and Contenders through Australian Sharpies, International 420s and NS14s to Impulse, Optimist and Laser dinghies, the Payne-Mortlock Sailing Canoe, Windsurfer LT boards and trailer yachts. Sailing club

Out on South Australia's Far West Coast, the sailing club is rarely just a sailing club, and Ceduna's is a case in point. From its foreshore position on Murat Bay, Ceduna Sailing Club operates as a licensed venue with a bar, canteen, clubhouse, restaurant and showers — and, judging by public reviews, as one of the town's favourite places to eat, drink and celebrate. The numbers support that reading. Reviews on the Birdeye directory average 4.8 stars across 32 ratings, with diners praising the meals and the sunset views over the beach; it serves dinner on Wednesday and Friday evenings, roughly 5.30 to 8.30, with the chicken raffles a noted drawcard; and it regularly hosts functions, including wedding receptions. The local tourism body lists it simply as an easygoing place to enjoy the waterfront. The sailing side remains the club's reason for being, and the two halves of its life feed each other: the same volunteers who run the racing also keep the kitchen and bar humming, and the function trade helps keep a sporting club viable in a town this far from anywhere. Friendliness is a claim every club makes; Christies Sailing Club has had the description pinned to it by others for decades. The Flying Fifteen class association's South Australian page says the club, founded in 1958, has steadily grown into one of the friendliest in the state — and it adds that the clubhouse view ranks among the best anywhere in South Australia. The basics are these: Christies is a family-oriented club holding accreditation as an Australian Sailing Discover Sailing Centre, sitting on the Esplanade at Christies Beach with a boat ramp right beside the clubhouse. Membership spans juniors through to adults, sailing everything from small dinghies up to trailerable yachts, and the clubhouse — licensed bar, fully equipped kitchen, change rooms — throws its regular social events open to the public, not just members. Comedy nights under the Laughing Buoy banner and live music sessions keep the rooms busy outside sailing hours, and the main room, which seats 85, is available for public hire with air conditioning, a kitchen, dishwasher, bain-marie, TV and whiteboard thrown in. Power, water and effluent disposal are available; depths are shallow and the entrance is difficult at low tide and dangerous in strong W-NW winds.

Every other club in this South Australian collection races on salt water. Clayton Bay Boat Club does its sailing on the fresh water of the Lower Murray, about an hour's drive from Adelaide, and that single fact shapes everything about it — the fleet, the calendar and the culture. The club began life in 1974 on the riverbank at Clayton Bay, between Milang and Goolwa, with Lake Alexandrina opening out nearby. Its stated mission is to encourage recreational boating in every form across the Murray Lakes and the Lower Murray River, welcoming all ages, experience levels and skills, and it styles itself — with a wink — among the best-kept secrets in the state. The club pays respect to the Ngarrindjeri people, naming them the traditional custodians of the country and waters where it meets. The fleet tells the story of the place: trailer yachts are the mainstay, with dinghies and catamarans appearing in smaller numbers, all of them chasing club trophies through a mixed-fleet program and usually finishing the day around a club barbecue. Fifty years of sailing on the Eyre Peninsula deserved a proper celebration, and Coffin Bay Yacht Club marked the occasion the only way a sailing club knows how: with boats on the water. From 12 to 17 April 2025 the club ran a week-long anniversary regatta that folded in the South Australian Heron and 125 state titles and drew classes ranging from Optimists through to A Class catamarans. It capped a half-century that began, by the club's own telling, with an offer from Phil Hurrell to teach John Rogers to sail — a generous gesture that grew into a public meeting, twenty-two inaugural members and a joining fee of two dollars. The club that officially formed on 26 January 1975 now sits within Australian Sailing's smallest affiliation fee band, yet it has hosted national championship racing and reached the finals of the 2025 Clubs SA Clubs and Community Awards, in both the Medium Club of the Year category and a community and heritage category. Ownership is the quality that sets the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia apart from almost every other sailing club in the country. Based at North Haven, out on Adelaide's Le Fevre Peninsula, the club holds its land and water in freehold through a unit trust — an arrangement it describes as unique in Australian yachting — which means marina berths and hardstand spaces can be bought, sold and leased, and its senior members carry voting rights. The scale is substantial by any measure: the property covers roughly 36 hectares from the inner breakwater through North Haven harbour to Lady Gowrie Drive, with berthing for 240 vessels of up to 22 metres, 150 hardstanding spaces for boats to 12 metres, and an expansion adding 74 further berths, some taking vessels of 35 metres. The club calls itself one of the country's leading yacht clubs and counts more than 1,200 members; by the harder currency of affiliation fees it sits, alongside the Royal SA Yacht Squadron, in the highest band charged to any South Australian club. One winter evening in August 1854, eight men met for dinner at the Goolwa Hotel to organise a party — marking the first anniversary of the day the local shipyard's first cargo vessel was launched. From that dinner, the club traces its origin, and on the strength of a formation as the Goolwa Regatta Club some time before August 1854 it claims the title of Australia's oldest continuously operating yacht club — a claim repeated by Australian Sailing but belonging to the club itself. Its letterhead carries the words "FOUNDED 1854". Whatever the title's precise standing, the pedigree is remarkable: the club existed within eighteen years of European settlement establishing the Province of South Australia, and its founding purpose was to run an annual regatta pitting Goolwa's fishing fleet against the whalers of Victor Harbor. Today the club sits at 112 Barrage Road in the old river port near the Murray's mouth, affiliated with Australian Sailing in the middle of the state's fee bands, with a marina accommodating 106 boats to 12 metres and a boat ramp that can launch or retrieve two vessels at once.
