Operating through a network of roughly 25 to 27 branches — the largest state-based inclusive sailing organisation in Australia — it puts people of every age and level of disability into boats on inland lakes, estuaries and ocean water, entirely through volunteer labour. Australian Sailing's judges made an unusual call at the 2025 awards: their national Club of the Year had no clubhouse, no marina and no fixed race course. Saltwater Veterans Sailing Project is a mobile, veteran-led club that exists to put current and former defence force members — and their families — onto the water for the sake of their wellbeing. Founded by Manly couple Scott and Jen Reynolds, it began in 2017 with Scott, fresh from an 18-year Navy career, and three veteran mates who had never sailed, racing under the name "Four Men in a Boat". The insight was simple and has held up: the teamwork, purpose and controlled adventure of sailing map closely onto the camaraderie of military life, and time afloat eases the transition into civilian communities. Participants — known as Salties — now number in the thousands. A death on the water, rather than a race or a regatta, brought Sandgate Yacht Club into being. After two sailors drowned when their boat capsized during an informal contest near the Brisbane River mouth in November 1911, the local community resolved to organise sailing properly, and the club was founded on 14 February 1912 to give the sport a disciplined home on Bramble Bay. By its own account it is the oldest established boating club in Sandgate and among the most senior sailing clubs in Queensland, and it still occupies the same waterfront strip at 95 Allpass Parade in Shorncliffe, on Cabbage Tree Creek's northern side near where the creek enters the bay. The club describes itself as a community icon of the Sandgate and Shorncliffe bayside, and the claim rests on more than longevity: since its inception it has maintained a safety and rescue operation that has looked after sailors and the wider public alike, a commitment that eventually grew into a separate volunteer marine rescue organisation. On a peninsula poking into the southern shore of Brisbane Water, Saratoga Sailing Club goes about its Sundays much as it has since 1972: rig on the foreshore, race on the estuary, then gather upstairs at the clubhouse where, as the club gently advises, you should "bring some gold coins for the social afterwards". It describes itself as "friendly and competitive", and both halves check out. New sailors of any age or experience are welcomed, members of other clubs are invited across for regatta days, and casual sailors can slot into the Sunday rhythm without a season-long commitment. Few Australian clubs put a Hartley TS16 trailer sailer — a plywood family design drawn in 1960 — on the same stretch of water as foiling International A-Class catamarans, with Lasers, other small dinghies and windsurfers in between.
