Adelaide's metropolitan coastline has produced sailing clubs for well over a century, but only one off-the-beach club there can trace an unbroken line back to 1911. Henley Sailing Club, based at 1 Seaview Road on West Beach, is described by Australian Sailing and community directories alike as Adelaide's oldest surviving off-the-beach sailing club — and the state's. It celebrated its centenary in 2011, and the clubhouse that stands today carries its own story of survival, built by members after a 1948 storm destroyed the previous premises. The club remains deliberately small: as of 2019 it numbered about seventy members, of whom forty per cent were women, with an average age of forty-one, under Commodore Damian Carey; by 2024 Brenton Scott was serving as secretary. Affiliated with Australian Sailing in fee Band 20, Henley runs on volunteer labour across every part of its operations, from the bar to administration to maintenance. Hervey Bay has two sailing clubs, and they divide the water by boat type. The off-the-beach sailors have Hervey Bay Sailing Club at Torquay; the trailable, keel and multihull yachts have the Hervey Bay Boat Club Yacht Squadron, an intra-club operating within The Hervey Bay Boat Club at Urangan. The squadron's address — 1 Buccaneer Drive — places it inside one of the Fraser Coast's larger club complexes, and its sailing life is organised around fortnightly Sunday racing on Hervey Bay, an annual regatta off K'gari, and a handful of winter cruise events. Its clubhouse is disarmingly modest: a converted shipping container known simply as The Container, set in the Boat Club grounds and used for race briefings, with post-race gatherings migrating to the Boat Club deck. That pairing — a container for the sailing business, full club facilities for everything else — captures the squadron's character. The tagline on the club's website — "promoting off the beach sailing on the Fraser Coast" — states the mission plainly. Hervey Bay Sailing Club is a dinghy and catamaran club on the Charlton Esplanade at Torquay, on the Hervey Bay foreshore, roughly a three-and-a-half-hour drive north of Brisbane, and it should not be confused with the Hervey Bay Boat Club Yacht Squadron, another club entirely — a trailable and keelboat outfit at the Urangan marina. Formed in 1968, the club has grown from a tent pitched on the sand each Sunday into an organisation that, by its own account, enjoys a national reputation for race-management excellence — a claim its events resume supports. The club brought the inaugural Nacra Catamaran World Championship to town in 1990–91, and in November 2018 ran the A-Class World Championship alongside the inaugural A-Class Classic World Championship. It began with a submission about boat ramps. When the Department for Marine and Harbours proposed building Hillarys Boat Harbour in 1983, people from the Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club asked for additional launching facilities — and from that request grew the association that, in 1986, inaugurated Hillarys Yacht Club. Four decades on, the club is one of the largest on the Perth coast: 270 on-the-water pens, a two-storey clubhouse with a restaurant, function room and bar overlooking the ocean upstairs, and a stated vision, in the club's own words, of becoming the leading club on the coast. Even the burgee has a pedigree — a blue pennant with a yellow cross and yellow "H" in its upper hoist, drawn up by a member and changed just once in the club's life. Dead Horse Bay — known on some charts as Lookout Bay — hides one of Sydney sailing's most enduring youth clubs. Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Sailing Club has operated from this Hawkesbury River shoreline near Brooklyn since 1968, formed specifically to give local children and young people an entry into the sport. More than half a century later the mission statement is unchanged: the club's focus, as the Lower Hawkesbury Aquatic & Recreation Association puts it, has been "learning, development, and fostering a love of our sport in young people", carried entirely by volunteers. Everything about the club runs on parent power. Mums, dads and carers crew the support boats, run the duty rosters, maintain the training fleet and keep the boatshed standing — the club describes itself as run by enthusiastic parent and carer volunteers with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, and participation by families is an essential part of the model rather than a nice extra. On its own website Humpybong Yacht Club bills itself as the leading off-the-beach sailing club serving north Brisbane and the southern Sunshine Coast — and in 2023 Australian Sailing handed that claim external weight, naming Humpybong the first-ever national Club of the Year winner in Category B, the small-club division, at the 2023 awards after it had first taken out the Queensland title. The clubhouse stands next to Woody Point's public boat ramp, a short stroll west of the jetty on the corner of Hornibrook Esplanade and Oxley Avenue, looking over Bramble Bay on the Redcliffe Peninsula. Few small clubs anywhere in the country can point to a comparable combination of location, program range and national recognition. "The little club that can!!!" runs the motto at Hunters Hill Sailing Club, and the three exclamation points are earned. This junior and youth dinghy club at Woolwich, on the lower Parramatta River near the Lane Cove River mouth, has produced five Olympians according to Australian Sailing's club profile, collected the 2018 NSW Sailing Club of the Year award, and sent the largest club contingent to the 2020 Optimist nationals in Victoria — a travelling party of around sixty. All of it comes out of a two-level clubhouse at Clarkes Point, run entirely by volunteers on a council site. The model is unapologetically family-based. Membership covers sailor plus parent, race-day jobs from canteen to duty officer are rostered volunteers, and members are expected to contribute. The numbers show what that buys: 249 members in the 2019/20 season, 121 of them under eighteen — a rebuild from a flat base of around 120 before the club's modern reinvention. The club's stated aim is to foster participation in sailing particularly among youth and family groups, and its leadership talks about the place as somewhere teenagers can safely work out who they are. Off-the-beach sailors on the Bellarine Peninsula speak about Indented Head in slightly possessive tones, and the club there is happy to fan the flame, describing its stretch of coast as arguably the best location for off-the-beach sailing in Victoria. Whether or not you accept the claim, the fundamentals are hard to argue with: clean, clear water, a soft white sand beach to launch from and a superb grassed rigging area behind it, all facing north across Port Phillip from a spot between Portarlington and St Leonards, about 33 kilometres east of Geelong. Indented Head Yacht Club is a dinghy club through and through, racing Olympic-class ILCAs alongside Tasars, Sabres, Impulses and Optimists over Olympic-style courses, and it states plainly that everyone from beginners to international champions is welcome. In a small township with few organised outlets for young people, the club notes that it provides the only structured youth activity in Indented Head — a role it clearly takes seriously, with a pathway that runs from five-year-olds through to national titleholders. Sailing on Lake Illawarra has run through one address for eight decades: 1 Northcliffe Drive, Warrawong, home of the Illawarra Yacht Club and of IYC Sailing Incorporated, the not-for-profit association that runs the sport from the licensed club's foreshore premises. The arrangement is distinctive — a community licensed club with its bistro, function rooms and auditorium providing the roof, while IYC Sailing independently organises the dinghies, trailable yachts, windsurfers and radio-controlled yachts on the water. The club's history reaches back to 1945, and by the Shellharbour historian's reckoning it stands as the Illawarra's oldest sailing club, started four years before neighbouring Oak Flats Sailing Club. This was one of New South Wales's great 16ft skiff strongholds. The club hosted the state championship in 1972, the Inter-Dominion in 1983 and the Australian championship across the Bicentennial summer of 1987–88, and by 1988 it had fourteen skiffs on register alongside trailable yachts, Flying Ants and a sailboard section drawing more than forty starters a race. Callala Bay, on Jervis Bay's northern shore, supports a rare arrangement: one volunteer-built clubhouse sheltering three sailing organisations and an outrigger canoe club. Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club is the keelboat and trailable-yacht arm of that community — the cruising counterpart to the dinghy sailors of Jervis Bay Sailing Club — and by its own account it was established in the bay during the 1980s and has grown into a club with a large membership of local boat owners. When the Formula 18 World Championship came to Fremantle in the summer of 2026, it did not go to one of the big keelboat clubs on the Swan River. It went to a catamaran stronghold at Coogee, on the northern side of Woodman Point, where Jervoise Bay Sailing Club has spent nearly five decades perfecting the art of two-hulled racing. The regatta ran from 24 January to 3 February, immediately after the club hosted the F18 Australian National Championship as a pre-Worlds tune-up, and the entry list told a story about local boatbuilding: Nacra Evolutions made up a third of the international fleet while Windrush Edges accounted for almost a quarter, the Windrush factory sitting practically next door to the venue. That a club of this size can shoulder a world championship surprises nobody in Western Australian multihull circles. Jervoise Bay had already hosted the Tornado World Championship in 1991/92, the 39th NACRA Nationals and the F18 Nationals in 2018, the Wing Foil Nationals in January 2024, and the Waxit Golden Grand Prix alongside the WA Nacra State Championship in November 2025.
